SPEAK TO ME
Because right now, more than ever, we must remember our voice.
Soft Sculptural Masks by Janey Moffatt

Speak To Me is a limited edition range of textile sculptures taking inspiration from the face coverings we’re wearing to protect us from Covid 19.  The pieces are intended to promote reflection on core beliefs during this time of great change.  With crisis comes an opportunity to grow and remember that the world is richer for hearing our voice.

A selection of these masks were on sale at Hastings Contemporary:

BRICKS & PIECES
A commission for the Observer Building, Hastings

The Observer Building is a project that contains threads of everything we enjoy about Hastings; a strong sense of community coming together to reclaim places and spaces, and a celebration of the imperfect, bohemian and eclectic aesthetic of the town.  I was inspired by the Japanese philosopy of wabi-sabi after studying the building through photography;
a world view centred on the acceptance of transience and imperfection that lends itself well to an interpretation of the concrete structure. Print techniques such as cyanotype and rust dyeing were used to harness the subtle marks of nature, and the names were added using free machine embroidery, applique, heat transfer paints and hand stitch.

Exhibited as part of the People and Place exhibition for Coastal Currents 2019.

THE GODDESS AS MOTHER

I discovered I was pregnant with my first child on the day I flew from Qatar to India. This concertina book and accompanying mixed media textile pieces is a study of materials through the lens of burgeoning motherhood in the backwaters and tea plantations of Kerala.
